How to read line movement

Separating information, flow, and risk management when a price changes — and what movement cannot tell you.

1. Establish the open

Record the opening price, the venue, and the time. Movement is only interpretable relative to a stated starting point.

2. Look for a known cause

Check whether a public information event — a confirmed roster change, an official announcement, a weather update — precedes the move. Attributing a move without a documented cause is speculation.

3. Compare venues

A move at one venue can be risk management. A synchronised move across several venues is more consistent with information. Both readings need timestamps from each venue to support them.

4. Benchmark against the close

Judge earlier prices against the closing line, the most informed price in the market's life. State the venue whose close you used.

5. Resist the narrative

Movement tells you something changed. It does not tell you what, and it does not tell you what happens next. Guides on this site stop where the evidence stops.
