How to compare prices across venues

Making a like-for-like comparison between two sportsbooks, or between a sportsbook and an exchange.

1. Match the market exactly

Confirm the same event, the same line, the same period, and the same settlement rules. Two prices on nominally the same market are not comparable if the resolution criteria differ.

2. Timestamp both quotes

Prices move. A comparison is only valid if both quotes were captured within a narrow window, and the window should be published alongside the comparison.

3. Remove margin on both sides

Compare margin-adjusted probabilities rather than headline prices, so a wide market does not look competitive because one side of it is generous.

4. Account for the cost of transacting

On an exchange, include commission and the spread. On a sportsbook, include the overround. Ignoring either makes the exchange look artificially cheap or expensive.

5. Check that size exists

A price with no depth behind it is a display, not an opportunity. Read posted limits or book depth before treating a quote as real.
